[Heritage Reborn] The Legend of Hong Kong: Leyland Victory II (G36) Restoration
Headline: "The Rebirth of Victory II" – A Hong Kong Icon Returns
For followers of British bus history in Asia, the Leyland Victory II (fondly known as the "Chicken" bus in HK due to its famously bouncy leaf-spring suspension) is an absolute icon. Designed specifically for Hong Kong’s steep terrain and demanding "One-Man-Operation" (OMO) in the late 70s, it is a model that truly defined an era of colonial transport.
After more than 20 years since its retirement, one particular unit — G36 (CA7949) — has made a miraculous return to the spotlight through the exhibition "The Rebirth of Victory II", a collaborative effort between the local preservation team "The Red Lantern" and The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK).
A Bridge Between Professional Craftsmanship and Student Passion
The restoration of G36 is a unique blend of professional engineering and educational outreach. The project was structured as a "living classroom" for Art and Design students, bridging the gap between seasoned experts and a younger generation with little prior knowledge of vintage transport.
The Project Leads:
* Owner: Mr. Sam Lam, whose vision and persistence saved G36 from being lost forever in a scrapyard. [紅燈籠 - The Red Lantern]
* Curator & Educator: Mr. Swing Lam, a lecturer at HSUHK who integrated the restoration into a cultural and design curriculum. 交通.散步.林兆榮SwingLam]
* Lead Engineer: Master Yung (also known as "Brother Chung"), the technical mastermind whose professional expertise guided the entire mechanical revival.
The Art of "Mechanical Transplantation"
While the amateur students took part in the aesthetic restoration—such as sanding, priming, and repainting the iconic red and yellow livery—the technical soul was handled by Master Yung. Due to the scarcity of parts, this was a true "organ transplant" operation:
* Salvaged Parts: Essential components like the destination blind boxes, windscreens, and original PLC gates were salvaged from other decommissioned Victory II units (G490 & G97).
* The Heart of a Citybus: Interestingly, the engine was transplanted from an ex-Citybus "Tree-cutter" (Bus 36). Due to local environmental tax regulations, the original Citybus unit had to be dismantled, but its heart lives on inside G36.
* Modern Tech meets Heritage: To overcome the challenge of discontinued parts, the team used 3D printing to recreate the rear light housings, ensuring every detail matched the original 1980s specifications.
A Legacy Preserved
The exhibition (held on May 1st-2nd) was filled with nostalgic touches, including vintage-style bus stops with hand-painted black-and-white poles recreated by the students.
As Master Yung poignantly noted during the restoration: Between this G36 and the LV36 preserved in the UK, the number "36" seems to be a lucky charm for the Victory II — it simply refuses to fade away.
Seeing this legendary machine standing tall again is a testament to Hong Kong's passion for transport heritage and the power of passing professional skills down to the next generation.
